Local SEO: How to Get Your Business on Google Maps and Local Search
A step-by-step guide to Google Business Profile and local SEO for small businesses in Pakistan and the UAE, so nearby customers can find you on Google and Maps.

When someone searches “salon near me”, “real estate agent in Lahore” or “web designer Dubai”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal search results. That map section is where many local customers make their choice. Getting into it is called local SEO, and most of the work is free.
Here is how to set it up properly.
1. Create your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map results.
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with the Google account you use for your business.
- Search for your business name. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create a new one.
- Choose the category that best describes your main service, for example “Marketing agency”, “Clothing store” or “Dental clinic”. You can add secondary categories later.
If customers visit you: add your exact address so you appear on the map. If you visit customers or work online: choose a service-area business and list the cities you serve instead of showing your address.
2. Verify the listing
Google needs to confirm you are the real owner before your profile appears publicly. It will offer one or more verification methods, often a short video of your premises or signage, a phone call or a postcard. Follow the option Google gives you; until the profile is verified, edits may not show.
3. Fill in every section
A complete profile looks more trustworthy and gives Google more information to match you with searches.
- Business name: use your real business name only. Adding keywords such as “Best Digital Agency Lahore” to the name can get the listing suspended.
- Phone number and website: use the same number and website you show everywhere else.
- Hours: include holidays and Ramadan or Eid timings when they change.
- Services or products: add each service with a short description.
- Description: explain in plain words what you do, who you help and where.
- Photos: add your logo, a cover photo, your work, your team and your premises. Real photos perform better than stock images.
4. Keep your details consistent everywhere
Google cross-checks your business name, phone number and address on other sites. Make sure they match exactly on:
- Your website footer and contact page
- Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
- Business directories and marketplaces you are listed on
Small differences, such as an old phone number on Facebook, make it harder for Google to trust which details are correct.
5. Ask happy customers for reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they also persuade new customers.
- Ask customers soon after a good experience, while it is fresh.
- Make it easy: share the direct review link from your profile on WhatsApp.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and professionally.
Never buy reviews or write them yourself. Google removes fake reviews and can restrict your profile.
6. Post updates regularly
Google Business Profile lets you publish posts with offers, news and photos. Posting even a couple of times a month shows the listing is active and gives customers a reason to contact you.
7. Support it with your website
Your website and your profile work together:
- Have a clear page for each main service.
- If you serve several cities, create a useful page for each area that explains how you help businesses there, rather than copying the same text with a different city name.
- Make sure your site loads quickly and works well on mobile.
- Add your phone number and a WhatsApp button where people can see them.
How long does it take?
A new, verified profile can start appearing for searches with your business name fairly quickly. Ranking for competitive searches like “digital marketing agency Karachi” takes longer and depends on your reviews, your website, your competitors and how close searchers are to you. Steady, honest work over a few months gives the best results.
